Which, as there’s an 0 in the middle, makes it Peugeot time. If you’re guessing that this is going to involve the 403, you’re right. If you instead want the 304, wait just under a month.

The 403 is something about which I knew absolutely nothing seeing as though it was a long time ago and it wasn’t that common or collectible outside France. Fortunately, the interweb knows all about it.

Peugeot concentrated on making sensible, practical, unexciting but well designed cars for sensible, practical and generally French people and the 403 was typical of these. Designed, like many a Peugeot after it, by Pininfarina, the 403 was a four door (with variations) three box RWD car made from 1955 to 1966 and was the first model from what the French love to refer to as the “marque of the lion” to sell a million.

Mechanically it was seemingly unadventurous with 1.3 or 1.5 litre petrol engines and four speed gearboxes but that was deceptive. It was one of the first cars to have a thermostatically controlled fan, had synchromesh on all of its gears and later during its run was sold with a 1.8 diesel.

The 403 was followed, logically enough, by the 404 but following Peugeot tradition the two overlapped by several years with the older 403 remaining available as a budget alternative.

Have a four door. Advanced readers may try and identify the blue car beside it.

Too sensible? Have the two door convertible. Sadly it was very expensive and not many did.

The young women pictured would be in their eighties now if they’ve made it this far.

Kinja'd!!!

Not sensible enough? Try the Mixte

Still not sensible enough? Have a pickup.

Want to see a famous 403? Here’s Columbo with his.

Some 403s were assembled in Australia by the local VW importer.

Well that’s y’all in Europe. Here in the U.S., civilians at least generally use the 03/04/2016 notation, in which case it is most definitely time for one of these!
